SUMMARY:Newcomen's Engine Beckons!
DESCRIPTION:In 1712\, Thomas Newcomen built the world’s first practical working steam engine and the one installed at Elsecar in 1795 is the only one remaining in its original location. \nToday\, we follow another section of the Penistone Line Trail\, on public footpaths via woodland\, Tankersley church\, the old hall with its connections to the film ‘Kes’\, to our finish in Elsecar. \nA shorter walk than usual which will allow time in the end for a relaxing look around the Elsecar Heritage Centre and all the attractions there\, including the Newcomen beam engine\, antique centre\, tea rooms\, sweet shop\, visitor centre\, and local hostelries for refreshment at the end of our walk. \n(The large ‘free’ car park is next to Platform 2 at Elsecar station\, suggest parking there if coming by car in good time to catch the 0909 from Platform 1 to Chapeltown for the start of the walk!) \nStart: 9.15 am at CHAPELTOWN station.  Finish: ELSECAR STATION. \nDistance: 7 miles. \nLeader: Stuart Parker (07908-450444) \nDepart Huddersfield 0810\, Honley 0821\, Shepley 0829\, Denby Dale 0834\, Penistone 0842\, Dodworth 0851\, Barnsley 0858\, Wombwell 0905\, Elsecar 0909 to arrive CHAPELTOWN 0915. \nDepart Lincoln 0724\, Gainsborough LR 0745\, Retford 0758\, Worksop 0808 to arrive at Sheffield 0842 then change: Depart: Sheffield 0905\, \nMeadowhall 0910 to arrive at CHAPELTOWN 0915. \n  \nElsecar is a great day out by train anytime! Depart: Sheffield 0835\, Meadowhall 0840\, Chapeltown 0847\, Elsecar 0853\, Wombwell 0856\, Barnsley 0903\, Dodworth 0909\, Silkstone Common 0912 to arrive PENISTONE 0919. \nGet outdoors for a walk using the train and the public rights of way network. Organised by the Penistone Line Partnership (PLP)\, these walks are to encourage the use of train services to visit some of South and West Yorkshire’s finest countryside. Walks may also take place in North Nottinghamshire\, Derbyshire\, and Lincolnshire. Join us for an enjoyable day out – all are welcome! Walks are free but fares apply.
