Barnsley is a large town on the west bank of the Dearne Valley. Barnsley town centre is full of independent shops, high street stores and is home to one of the best markets in South Yorkshire.

The Glass Works Barnsley is an exciting new destination that offers visitors shopping, restaurants, a cinema and a bowling alley.

There is a mix of cafés, restaurants, Barnsley Civic Theatre and The Lamproom Theatre, museums including Experience Barnsley Museum & Discovery Centre & The Cooper Gallery is open to the public all year round.

The Barnsley Metrodome is a sports and leisure facility 5 minutes from the Barnsley Interchange.

Right in the heart of Barnsley, Dearne Valley Country Park is criss-crossed by inviting paths, taking you through woodland and grassland, with riverside wildlife to enjoy along the way.

Barnsley Station

Train journeys to Barnsley take 49 minutes from Huddersfield and 20 – 27 minutes from Sheffield. All trains are operated by Northern Trains Ltd. Find up to date ticket and timetable information here.

Bus Services

Barnsley Interchange includes Barnsley Railway Station and is served by all of the town’s local and intercity bus routes. A footbridge connects the rail station directly to the bus station. Facilities and timetables for Barnsley Interchange’s Buses and Coaches can be found here.

Barnsley Station Adopters – Chilypep

Chilypep stands for Children and Young People’s Empowerment Project – based in Barnsley centre.
Led by Chantelle Parke with young people from Chilypep’s Barnsley Young Commissioners and The BRV Project. Jason White from Barnsley Civic lends his support for station adoption projects.
Recently, the group has installed a public mural designed with the help of Robyn Makings, located on the bridge between Barnsley Train Station and Interchange. The artwork features 10 vignettes with QR codes signposting young people to local support services, including British Transport Police 61016 reporting and Passenger Assistance.
Funders and supporters involved – Northern, Community Rail Network, South Yorkshire Young People’s Alliance, NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, Barnsley Council’s Great Childhood’s Ambitions Fund, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), and Penistone Line Partnership.
