Celebrate the Beauty and Engineering Marvels of the Penistone Line Viaducts!
Penistone Line Partnership is running an exciting Photography Competition to celebrate Railway 200!
The Penistone Line is home to several impressive viaducts, each showcasing remarkable railway engineering. Lockwood Viaduct opened on 1st July 1850, and stands 136 feet high at its maximum to the top of the parapet with 32 arches, carrying the line over the River Holme. Denby Dale Viaduct, rebuilt in 1880, is an elegant stone structure spanning 21 arches and rising 34 meters above the valley. Penistone Viaduct, constructed in 1850, was originally a mix of stone and timber but was later rebuilt in masonry after storm damage in 1916. These viaducts remain vital to the railway, offering passengers stunning views while preserving the area’s rich industrial heritage.
The Penistone Line has a further 7 lesser-known viaducts, find Attercliffe Viaduct within the map of the Sheffield to Meadowhall Penistone Line Trail guide.
